「odds」の英語の意味と使い方

解説

「確率、可能性」という意味なので、宝くじや賭け事で良く使われます。

例えば、競馬であれば、「配当率」という意味で使われますので以下のようなフレーズが考えられます。

★The odds are 1/1000 for that horse.
（あの馬の配当率は1/1000。）

日常で使う場合は、何かの確率・可能性について聞いてます。

★What are the odds that he’s going to show up on time?
（彼が時間通りに到着する確率はどのくらいよ？）

★ What are the odds you’re going to drink tonight?!
  （あなたが今夜飲む可能性はどのくらい？！）
※飲むと分かっていながら、ふざけて聞いてる感じです。

上記の例文のように what are odds~ という聞き方は一般的なので覚えておいても良いですね。意味としては「○○をする可能性はどのくらい？」です。

★ What are the odds that Steve is going to get the job at Google?
（スティーブがグーグルに雇われる可能性はどのくらい？）
